In situ synthesis, a alternative way to produce materials?
In situ synthesis or reactive processing offers interesting ways to produce intermetallics or metal matrix composites by powder metallurgy or casting. The simplicity of the concept and the large variety of possibilities is very attractive. The different processing routes will be shortly discussed and illustrated. Examples include the production of Al-(titanium boride), aluminide-(titanium boride), nickel silicides and Fe3Al-(titanium boride).
