Effect of powder characteristics on microstructural development in bodies produced by pressureless sintering of Al/TiO2 composite powder
Pressureless sintering of discus milled Al/TiO2 composite powder has been carried out under argon in an alumina tube furnace. The densification of the composite during sintering has been investigated at 1480degreesC for the variables of ball milling and holding times. It was shown that lower apparent porosity was obtained with the reduction of particle size and at longer holding time. The growth of Al2O3 grains was evident with the increase of holding time. The reduction of the powder particle size also increases the hardness of the Ti2O(Al)/Al2O3 composite produced.
