Acetabular cup deformation and strength improvement by physical crosslinking
The lifetime of an artificial hip joint is limited to approximately ten years. Year by year rises the number of the young patients come upon the help of implanted artificial hip joint. Compare the lifetime and the need of early application it is obvious to improve each part of the joint. The purpose of our paper is to describe one deformation form of the acetabular cup, and to explain structural modification by means of physical crosslinking, in order to improve the strength of the cup. Using this technique, acetabular cup failures can be reduced and their useful life can be increased. Successful impact, tensile, and hardness measurements shows the strength improvement of UHMWPE raw material which can be achieved by a beta radiation dose of a value of 60-66 kGy.
