Effect of Position of the Functional-Group on the Equilibrium and Dynamic Surface-Properties of Butyl Alcohols
Adsorption properties of aqueous solutions of butanol-1, butanol-2, and tert-butanol under equilibrium and dynamic conditions were investigated. The study was aimed at determining how changes in the geometrical structure of an amphiphilic molecule can influence its adsorption properties and foamability. The surface tension measurements were carried out using the du Nouy ring method. The frothability of the solutions was determined by two independent methods : a pneumatic method and a combined pneumatic-mechanical method. It was found that the three isomers of butyl alcohol differ in their adsorption properties. The strongest decrease in surface tension was observed for butanol-1 and the lowest for tert-butanol. The foamability of the solutions changes in a similar sequence; it decreases from butanol-1 through butanol-2 to tert-butanol solutions. Similar foamability changes were observed for both test methods. It was found that as the chemical structure of butyl alcohol was changed from the linear (butanol-1) to the bulkiest (tert-butanol), the adsorption behavior and foam stability changed in a similar way. These changes in foam stability have been related to changes in the values of the surface elasticity forces induced in the foam films studied.
