Preparation and Characterizations of Two-Component Polyurethane Flame Retardant Coatings Using Bromo Modified Polyesters
Two-component polyurethane flame retardant coatings were prepared by blending bromo modified polyesters (BAOs) and polyisocyanate. BAOs were synthesized by polycondensation of bromoacetic acid, a flame retardant aliphatic carboxylic acid, with adipic acid, trimethylolpropane, and 1,4-butanediol. The content of bromoacetic acid was varied from 10, 20, to 3owt%. Various physical properties of these new flame retardant coatings were comparable with non-flame retardant coatings. They showed drying time of less than 4 h and sufficient pot-life time of 15-26 h, so they were proved to be flame retardant coatings with short drying time and long pot-life time. Coatings with 3owt% bromoacetic acid did not burn using the vertical burning test.
