Until the beginning of the 20th century, stirring was mostly regarded only marginally in most production processes. One century later, many aspects of stirring technology have been largely penetrated scientifically. This paper presents influential publications that contributed significantly to the impressive gain in scientific knowledge. The focus is put on papers dealing with the determination of power input and the characterization of liquid mixing, suspension of solids and dispersion of fluids.
