Synthesis, Phase-transition Behaviors, and Birefringence Properties of Fluorinated Diphenyl-Diacetylene Derivatives
We designed fluorinated diphenyl-diacetylene-based liquid crystal (LC) molecules that exhibit enantiotropic nematic phases near room temperature. These LC molecules also show high birefringence (Delta(n) approximate to 0.35) similar to their non-fluorinated analogs. The introduction of fluorine atoms into LC molecules can decrease the phase-transition temperature without decreasing birefringence.
