A cost effective non-precious electrocatalyst derived from egg white and doped with iron for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is synthesized by a facile method. With the assistance of SiO2 template, the obtained electrocatalyst exhibits a tremella-like morphology with large surface area. Based on the unique surface morphology and the contribution of Fe and N, the as-prepared non-precious electrocatalyst performs a comparable catalytic activity to the commercial Pt/C for ORR in alkaline media, demonstrating a potential application in fuel cells.
