Process technology development at Rand Refinery
Rand Refinery uses the Miller chlorination/Wohlwill electrolysis method of refining mine rough bars and jewellers' scrap, and has recently confirmed the existing pyrometallurgical process is more cost effective than changing to hydrometallurgical methods. Recent work has shown the benefits of chlorinating smaller charges and of converting to a chloride only electrolyte environment. A high speed gold electrolysis' (HSGE) unit will shortly be piloted with a view to installation of a full scale replacement plant whose main benefit will be a significant gold stock reduction.
