Selection of analytical methods used for the assessment of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment
Electric and electronic wastes (computer and television set elements) were disintegrated, ground (grain size below 1 mm) and analyzed for Cr(VI), total Cr, Cd, Hg, Pb and Br by optical emission spectrometry with inductive-coupled plasma, UV-visible spectrophotometry and cold vapor at. absorption spectrometry. To test applicability of the methods, 3 corn. certified reference materials (a total Cr, Cd, Pb, Br and Hg-contg. acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer and 2 polyethylenes) and 2 house-made ref. materials (Cr(VI)-contg. polyethylenes) were used. The anal. methods used were applicable for studying the content of inorg. impurities in the waste. Only Pb content was higher than the permissible one according the European Union requirements.
