In January 1996 a serious chlorine release took place at a plant for the production of chloromethanes in Spain, resulting in a toxic cloud that reached a neighbouring town. This work describes the cause of the accident and the ensuing sequence of events. Emergency procedures are also discussed. Finally, in the light of the conclusions reached some recommendations are drawn for industrial facilities handling chlorine.
