Scale-up of monolithic post-reactor for gas-phase processes
Monolithic structured catalysts/reactors have gained only limited application in chemical synthesis due to their adiabatic character and low specific volumetric catalytic activity. The main goal of this work is the investigation of a monolithic/structured catalyst as post-reactor for debottlenecking of gas-phase processes. Due to its low pressure drop the monolithic post-reactor could be implemented easily and fast in production environment without significant additional capital expenses (in compressors or other related devices). In this work we report the development of a monolithic post-reactor from lab to production scale for an industrial hydrogenation reaction. The preparation of monolithic catalyst is based on utilization of pellet catalyst as raw material avoiding time and cost intensive catalyst development. The scale-up principles for the monolithic catalyst and post-reactor are presented and discussed in detail. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
