Liquid crystalline compounds containing (2-cyclopropylcyclopropyl)alkyl moieties in their side chains have been synthesized for the first time. Some of them showed mesophases SmA and SmB as well as N phases. In comparison to compounds with simple alkyl side chains, the new ones with the bicyclopropyl moieties were found to shift the phase transition temperatures to a lower temperature region. The dielectric and optical anisotropies of the compounds mainly depended on their inesogenic substructures.
