Studies on susceptibility of polyurethanes to biodegradation
Two polyurethanes were synthesized in the reaction of isophorone diisocyanate, poly(epsilon-caprolactone)diol and MeN(CH2CH2OH)(2) and biodegraded under simulated composting conditions. The polyurethanes formed as films underwent a deep biodegradation by hydrolysis of the urethane and ester structures. In particular, the structural fragments derived from MeN(CH2CH2OH)(2) were susceptible to biodegrdn. Changes in polyurethane film surface morphoL and an increase of their surface roughness were also obsd.
