Synthesis and crystal structure of [1-(toluene-4-sulfonyl)-piperidin-4-yl]-methanol
The title compound, [1-(toluene-4-sulfonyl)-piperidin-4-yl]-methanol was synthesized by the condensation of diphenyl(piperidin-4-yl)methanol with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in methylene dichloromethane as solvent and triethylamine as the base. The product obtained was characterized by spectroscopic techniques and the structure was investigated by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal class in the space group P21/c with cell parameters a=10.2490(13) angstrom, b=11.4710(9) angstrom, c=20.997(3) angstrom, beta=116.344(3)degrees, V=2212.2(5) angstrom(3) for Z=4. The structure reveals that the piperidine ring is in a chair conformation. The geometry around the S atom is comparable with the classic tetrahedral value. The structure exhibits both inter and intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the type O-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot O.
