Most research on roller-cone-bit downhole dynamics has focused on axial vibration, or "bit bounce," and its effects on bit performance. Field tests were conducted in a full-scale drilling-research rig to investigate roller-cone-bit vibrations and the effect of these vibrations on bit performance. Three kinds of harmful vibrations were observed, and their effects on rate of penetration (ROP), insert breakage, and bearing/seal life were analyzed.
