Spectroscopic Properties of Isolated SC-3-at-C-82 Metallofullerene
An endohedral triscandium fullerene, Sc-3@C-82, has been purified and isolated for the first time by the so-called two-stage high-performance liquid chromatography. The isolated Sc-3@C-82 fullerene has an absorption onset at ca. 1100 nm in toluene solution with several broad features up to 400 nm. The ESR spectrum of the isolated Sc-3@C-82 exhibits 22 perfectly symmetric hyperfine splittings with an inherent line width of 0.77 G at 220 K, which is consistent with a unique structure that three scandium atoms are encaged triangularly within the C-3 upsilon isomer of C-82
