Association of Molecules in P-Azoxyanisole
It has been shown that based on density values in a temperature range 100-144 degrees C, the specific heats and transition enthalpy of p-azoxyanisole can be indirectly derived, Chemical equilibria are assumed existing between monomers and dimers both in the nematic and isotropic liquid states with appropriate equilibrium constants indicating a short-range order. The transition occurs when the mole fractions of dimers and monomers are almost equal, even under a pressure of 640 bar as measured by McColl and Shih (Phys. Rev, Lett. 1972, 29, 85).
