Interpretation of Empirical Criterion for Cluster Phase - Reexamination of Prefactor in Nucleation Theory
An explanation of a succesful empirical criterion for the phase of clusters produced in a supersonic jet is reexamined in the light of a kinetic prefactor for freezing proposed by Grant and Gunton. It is found that the Grant-Gunton theory accounts significantly more faithfully for the empirical criterion than does the theory of molecular jumps based on a model of viscous flow and confirms the essential correctness of the kinetic explanation.
