Rotational-Dynamics of Metallo-Endofullerenes in Solution
From an analysis of the temperature dependent line width of hyperfine components of solution EPR spectra of metallo-endofullerenes (M@C-82, M = Sc, Y, La), the rotational correlation time tau of these nearly spherical molecules in the solvents CS2, toluene, and cis-decalin could be determined. It was found that in the low-viscosity regime near room temperature tau(r) is close to its free rotator value, indicating nearly complete decoupling of solute dynamics from the solvent. Only at lower temperatures close to the freezing point of the solvents studied is a Stokes/Einstein relation tau(r) approximate to eta/T recovered, although with a reduction factor on the order of 100. Ln addition, from the spin relaxation times an estimate for the anisotropic terms in the spin Hamiltonian could be obtained.
