Carbon xerogels as sulfur cathode additive in lithium-sulfur batteries
C xerogels were synthesized by polycondensation and carbonization of org. precursors (resorcinol, formaldehyde) and used for prepn. of a composite S cathode. The cathode showed a sp. discharge capacity 650 mAh/g at 0.05 C current rate, which remained remarkably stable over subsequent 30 charge/discharge cycles. Excellent reversibility and cyclic stability of this composite cathode was explained by a porous structure and developed surface area, allowing for the retention of the intermediate Li polysulfides within the C framework, without any excessive dissoln. in the bulk of electrolyte.
