Ionic liquid gel gated electro-spun poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) nano-ribbon
An electro-spun poly(3,4-ethylenedioxthiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) - PEDOT:PSS nano-ribbon was fabricated and successfully gated using an ionic liquid (IL) gel dielectric. The high specific capacitance of the IL (10 mu F/cm(2)) permitted testing devices with longer channel lengths compared to the width and with low operating voltages. Under a positive gate bias, the device operated as a reversible electrochemical transistor. The changes in channel current however were much higher under negative bias, suggesting the presence of simultaneous electrochemical and electrostatic charge doping mechanisms. The transistor ON/OFF ratio was 730 and the hole mobilitywas 5.5 cm(2)/V-s in the accumulation mode. A 100 Hz square wave test signal was applied to the gate and the device response was near instantaneous and that faithfully followed changes in the input signal. IL gating of PEDOT:PSS therefore reveals the possibility of extending its use via electrochemical and electrostatic doping. It would also make devices based on this polymer multifunctional with potential use in diodes, transistors and bio-sensors. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
