Shear alignment of a poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) triblock copolymer/MWCNT nanocomposite
A triblock copolymer (BCP) of the PS-b-PB-b-PS (SBS) type [PS: polystyrene, PB: polybutadiene] with cylindrical morphology containing pristine or PS-functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was exposed to steady shear and large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS). Axis symmetric shear was applied in a rheometer for the orientation of the BCP cylinders and the alignment of MWCNTs within the BCP matrix. Neat SBS and SBS nanocomposites with 0.1 wt% of pristine MWCNTs (p-CNT) and PS-grafted MWCNTs (PS-g-CNT) were prepared by solution mixing prior to the shear experiments. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated long-range ordered BCP cylindrical nanodomains highly oriented and hexagonally packed in the case of LAOS. SBS/CNT-g-PS nanocomposite showed slightly disturbed BCP orientation, however well aligned CNTs in the direction of shear for LAOS conditions. The extent of ordering with respect to the different shear conditions and MWCNT surface functionalisation are elucidated. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
