Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of furfural and a real wastewater using UVC/TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized on white concrete in a fixed-bed reactor

TiO2 nanoparticles were immobilized on a concrete surface of fixed-bed reactor and used for furfural photocatalytic degradation of real and synthetic wastewater. At optimum conditions of initial pH 9, TiO2 loading density 50 g/m2 and UV irradiation intensity 24 W, the furfural and COD removal were 98.3% and 84.2% respectively for synthetic wastewater after 5 h, while for real wastewater, COD and TOC removal reached 59.53% and 86.65%, respectively after 8 h. The composite reused for four consecutive cycles with maximum 4.4% reduction in efficiency for both cases. Moreover, pseudo-first-order kinetics were best fitted to experimental data in both cases.
