Resolution and Configurational Stability of the Chiral Fullerenes C-76, C-78, and C-84 - A Limit for the Activation-Energy of the Stone-Wales Transformation
Chiral fullerenes C-76, C-78, and C-84 were kinetically resolved by asymmetric osmylation providing three optically active allotropes of elemental carbon. The circular dichroism spectra of D-3 C-78 and D-2 C-84 are more detailed than the corresponding UV-vis spectra. Optically active C-76 and C-84 are configurationally stable under conditions approaching their limit of thermal (600-700 degrees C) and photochemical (193 nm) stability. Given the potential racemization of D-2 C-84 by two consecutive Stone-Wales pyracylene transformations, the configurational stability of C-84 at 700 degrees C sets a limit for the activation energy of the Stone-Wales transformation of > 83 kcal/mol.
