Retardation Effect of Catechol Moiety during Radical Copolymerization of 3,4-Dihydroxystyrene with Various Monomers
To clarify the induction and retardation effects of 3,4-dihydroxystyrene ( 2HSt) during radical polymerization, 2HSt was copolymerized with styrene, n-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, and N-(2-ethylhexyl)maleimide (2EHMI). No induction period was observed for the copolymerization systems and the copolymerization rates significantly changed depending on the amount of 2HSt with different fashion according to the nature of the used comonomer. An alternating copolymer of 2HSt and 2EHMI exhibited excellent adhesion property for metal bonding at a high temperature under atmospheric condition.
