The synthesis of azole-containing triarylmethanes via the Cu-catalyzed desulfonylative reaction of benzhydryl sulfone derivatives with azoles is described. Various azoles such as 1,3-thiazole and 1,3-oxazoles are viable substrates under these reaction conditions. This methodology is applicable to multiple and sequential reactions for the rapid generation of complex molecules.
