An activator effect in a powder mixture on a thickness and structure of coatings obtained by thermal diffusion zinc-plating under recirculation of the reactive atmosphere
Cleaned and etched steel elements and a Zn powder and an activator-contg. mixts. were placed inside a rotating working chamber at 450 degrees C for embedding of protective coatings on the steel. The activator type (NH4Cl, ZnCl2 and their mixts.) as well as time of coating deposition (2-6 h) were variable process parameters. A thickness of the coatings and their phase compn. were detd. by microscopy and X-ray diffractometry, resp. The thickness of the coatings increased with an increase of the process duration and the mass of NH4Cl used. The coatings had a double layered structure of Fe-Zn intermetallic phases. A compact layer of Fe11Zn40 phase directly on the steel substrate was covered with a layer of FeZn10 phase.
