Ball Milled Si-W Alloys: Part II. Thermal Behavior and Performance in Li Cells
In this second part of a two-part study of the synthesis, microstructure and electrochemical properties of ball milled silicon-tungsten alloys (Si100-xWx, x = 15, 20, 25, 30), the influence of alloy composition and microstructure on the electrochemistry of Si-W alloys is investigated. Unlike other Si-transition metal alloys, which when heating above 600 degrees C can result in crystallization and capacity fade, the prepared Si-W alloys have high thermal stability, with enhanced cycling performance after annealing at 800 degrees C. This makes such alloys compatible with high temperature processing for carbon coating, which can increase cycle life further. (c) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.
