Synthesis and photoisomerization behavior of polyamide-phenyleneethynylenes bearing azobenzene moieties in the main chain
Novel azobenzene-containing optically active polyamide-phenyleneethynylenes, poly(2-3ap)-poly(2-3bm) were synthesized by the Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling polymerization of azobenzene-containing bis(iodophenylene) monomer 2 and m-, p-diethynylbenzene derivatives 3ap-3bm. Polymers with number-average molecular weights of 1500-107,800 were obtained in 52%-quantitative yields. The azobenzene moiety of 2 showed reversible light-induced trans-cis isomerization, while the polymers showed irreversible isomerization depending on the composition of mixed solvents.
