Mechanistic Aspects of the Electrochemical Formation of Polyveratrole
Two layers with different morphologies are observed on a platinum surface when 1,2-dimethoxybenzene (Veratrole) is oxidized in CH3CN/Bu4NBF4. The inner layer is composed by several smooth, uniform thin films that are formed by instantaneous nucleation followed by bidimensional growth, while the external layer is formed according to instantaneous nucleation-unidimensional growth and has a fibrillar morphology : As the material grows on the electrode surface, oscillations are observed during chronoamperometry and they are related to the formation of a multilayer and coalescence of fibrils. In situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemical measurements allowed us to identify intermediate species and suggest a reaction scheme that supports the stacking structure we have reported in former papers.
