Image-Potential-Induced Resonance on Al(111) Observed by 2-Photon Photoemission Spectroscopy
Using the technique of two-photon photoemission we have observed the peak in the density of states of an image-potential resonance on Al(111). Image-potential resonances have a short, bulklike lifetime, resulting in a very weak, but observable, two-photon photoemission signal. We find the peak of the density of states for AI(111) n=1 resonance at 0.46 +/- 0.1 eV below the vacuum level. Our measurement is in agreement with previous inverse photoemission measurements as well as with several theoretical treatments of image resonances on metal surfaces. This investigation provides further confirmation of the existence of such a resonance level on AI(111).
