Photodesorption Dynamics of Ammonia from Ni(111) and NiO/Ni(111)
The photodesorption dynamics of ammonia, adsorbed on Ni(111), both clean and oxidized, was studied using 193 and 248 nm pulsed laser excitation. Time-of-flight and angular distributions were measured. The angular distributions for both surfaces peak along the surface normal; there is a second maximum located 20-degrees off-normal for the oxidized surface. The desorption cross section depends on wavelength (I X 10(-18) and <1 X 10(-20) CM2 at 193 and 248 nm, respectively), and on the surface used (higher for Ni) than oxidized Ni at 193 nm. The time-of-flight spectra are adequately fit using two characteristic energies, which do not depend on the wavelength (300 and 35 meV for Ni, 225 and 35 meV for oxidized Ni).
