The paper reports the suitability of silica aerogels as substitutes for conventional reinforcing silica fillers in rubber materials. By way of example three different mixtures for various fields of application (standard, roll covering and tyre) are investigated. information on processing (rheometer graphs) and mechanical properties (strength, elasticity and hardness) can be obtained. The potential for the optimization of abrasion behaviour is shown.
