Special carbon blacks for applications in mechanical rubber goods
XE-37 is a low surface area black with high DBP absorption. Its reinforcement is lower than that of N 550. The performance of XE-37 in comparison to other soft blacks, mainly to N 683, has been evaluated in a characteristic EPDM formulation. High emphasis was put on the rheological behaviour. XE-37 yielded lower Mooney viscosity than N 683 and Durex 0. On a laboratory extruder XE-37 gave a higher extrusion speed than N 683 and Durex 0. Due to its low surface area, XE-37 resulted in lower tensile strength, elongation at break and modulus 300% than N 683. Durex 0 gave the highest elongation at break but the lowest tensile strength and modulus 300%. Both XE-37 and Durex 0 yielded lower compression set than N 683. With respect to elasticity XE-37 took a medium position between the ''higher elastic'' Durex 0 and the ''lower elastic'' N 683.
