Laser engraving of rubbers - The use of microporous materials
Cellular rubbers were investigated under focused CO2-laser radiation. The aim was the development of materials suit-able for laser engraving. MR and EPDM compounds containing inorganic fillers were vulcanized in the presence of a blowing agent (azodicarbonamide). The microporous rubbers obtained had pore diameters lower than 100 mu m. The materials were engraved with a 25 W CO2-laser and both the engraving speed and the quality of the engravings were examined. The investigation was carried out with regard Po an enhancement of the production speech of flexographic printing plates and rubber stamps.
