The idea of industrial utilization of renewable raw materials has been propagated from all sides without truly knowing its performance potential. An overview of the preparation and treatment of fibres and oi the mechanical properties of plastics reinforced with natural fibres as compared with those of glass fibre reinforced plastics should help making the discussion more objective.
