The binary system didodecyldimethylammonium bromide/water has two lamellar phases at room temperature : a swollen lamellar phase with 100 angstrom thick water layers and a collapsed lamellar phase with 6 angstrom thick water layer. Silicic acid monomers have been dissolved in the water layers of the collapsed phase and condensed to give two-dimensional silica polymers.
