A quartz crystal microbalance was used to detect different phases of the system Au-Hg. For this purpose two piezoelectric crystals with gold electrodes were used in series, and their frequencies were monitored during the process of mercury amalgamation. The shape of the plot of several frequency shifts experienced by the crystal vs the percent of amalgamated mercury (calculated using the other crystal) reveals the different phases.
