To facilitate formation of homogeneous stable monomolecular films of protoporphyrin (PPIX), phospholipid PE has been attached to propionic acid side chains. The modified compound has been characterized using optical and NMR spectroscopy. Fluorescence decay measurements indicate that LB films of these molecules exhibit stable and homogeneous structures. Moreover, transfer of energy from a molecule belonging to one layer to another in the neighboring layer readily takes place.
