The photoactivity of a series of acridizinium and 9-methyl acridizinium salts is rationalised in terms of a variety of crystal packing effects. The role of ground state and excited state geometry is considered along with the molecular motion required for intermediate excimer formation. It is shown that the influence of charge-balancing anion on crystal packing is subtle and as such is an effective mode of crystal engineering.
