Several cyanovinyl aromatics and related compounds were newly designed and synthesized for the enhancement of second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (beta) without narrowing the optical transparency. The values of net dipole moment and second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility were tuned by control of vector direction of dipole moment and beta in tetra-substituted benzene compounds.
