Structures and Properties of an Alkenyl Liquid-Crystalline Compound
The crystal and molecular structure of the mesomorphic compound 4(3 "-Pentenyl)4’(cyano)1,1’-bicyclohexane having the molecular formula C5H9-C6H10-C6H10-CN has been determined by direct methods. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/n, a = 5.609, b = 31.390, c = 9.562 Angstrom, beta = 98.89 degrees and Z = 4. Least squares refinement leads to R = 0.065 (R(w) = 0.081) for 2326 observed reflections. The packing in the solid crystalline state of the compound is discussed and is compared with that derived from X-ray diffraction data in the liquid crystalline state.
