Intrinsically Biaxial Systems - A Variational Theory for Elastomers
Elastomeric networks of polymer liquid crystals are a classical example of "solid liquid crystals". They are organized in aggregates of ellipsoidal shape, which can be represented by a symmetric tensor field L, which is closely related to the nematic order parameter Q. We describe a continuum theory, which takes into account both the mechanical forces and the nematic properties of the system.
