We have analysed x-ray diffraction data of binary mixtures of a terminal polar (A) and a terminal non-polar (B) mesogens to calculate the average lateral distance (D) between the molecules. The variation of D with molar concentration in the smectic phase shows a definite maximum near equimolar concentration. Using a simple model, density of mixtures in the smectic phase have been calculated.
