CATALYTIC N-ALKYLATION OF PRIMARY AMINES BY ALCOHOLS
A study has been made of the vapour-phase N-alkylation of cyclohexylamine or 2-ethyl-hexyl-amine by n-1-heptanol or n-1-pentanol on an industrial copper-zinc-aluminium oxide catalyst (SNM-1) and a reduced, promoted, sintered iron catalyst. The best yields of asymmetrical secondary and tertiary amines (up to 99% in total) are observed at a temperature of 175-195-degrees-C with an amine/alcohol molar ratio of 0.2.
