Use of Zeolite to Control Ammonium in Bacillus-Amyloliquefaciens Alpha-Amylase Fermentations
Both synthetic and natural ammonium-sorbing zeolite were used to control the NH4+ level in Bacillus amyloliquefaciens cultures producing extracellular alpha-amylase. The addition of biochemically inert calcium aluminosilicates significantly increased the yield of the enzyme. A simple mathematical model explaining the mechanism has been formulated and its parameters estimated.
