Professional groups - what do they do?
Changes in the structure of the Divisions of the IEE and formulation of the Learned Society Strategy Zed the Power Division to review the scopes of its Professional Groups during 1997. Rather than simply replacing the existing definitions in the Divisional Handbook, it is necessary to promulgate the results of the review far the consideration of the wider membership who may not be aware of the existence of Professional Groups, much less their mission in life. For the Groups, to operate effectively they need a fresh influx of new members bringing with them new ideas and challenges to the status quo. Some of the new members will be nominated by Centre Committees, others through personal contact and yet others through their own initiative, fired by a desire to serve an Institution which is perceived to be advancing the state of the art electrical power engineering. Not limited to UK members, Professional Groups must also reach out to international members to involve them in their activities and serve their interests.
