Maximizing the output of a solar-driven tubular reactor
Concentrated solar energy can be used to supply heat for endothermic chemical reactions; in this way solar energy is transformed into chemical bonds. Taking a tubular reactor with a simple first-order reaction as an example, we show that there exists an optimal temperature for a specific reaction and design at which the energy conversion efficiency is maximized, and it is always desirable to channel the reactants through a path with monotonically decreasing solar flux.
