Preparation of Zirconia Tubes with High-Strength and High Thermal-Shock Resistance
Strengthening and toughening of zirconia tubes adding insufficient amounts of Y2O3 as stabilizer were investigated. Besides yttria, zirconia, added by suitable quantities of additives, that can promote changes in the properties of the materials, such as a compound stabilizing agent and a tribasic system, were investigated. Then the zirconia powder containing the additives was sintered at high temperature. A solid solution of the partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was formed and transformation-toughened zirconia (TTZ) was obtained. The optimal combination of the technical parameters and the proper firing schedule of the products were explored. The zirconia tubes obtained using these methods have been proven to show high-strength high thermal-shock resistance, good electric conductivity and a long lifespan.
